1) The SLS and contemporary railway photography
There are many photographs available on the site for free view. A list of these photographs is available here. As many of our members continue to photograph the contemporary railway scene on both Network Rail and other lines in the UK and overseas the collection included historic and more contemporary images. Members photographs are regularly used in the Journal. (Section revised 20 October 2021)
2) The SLS historic photograph collections
a) Library Collection (Prints)
The Society Library holds over 80,000 prints covering railways which can be made available.
b) Negative collection & print sales (Section updated 12 April 2017)
Obtained from a wide number of sources, the Society has a unique collection of circa 20,000 negatives covering pre-grouping, grouping and nationalised eras of British railways and many from overseas railways too. The Society holds the Cam' Camwell railway archive and listings of the 'Cam' bequest are being added as they are being completed.
The set of images by famous railway photographers now also includes "The Railway Man" images, our Eric Lomax Photo Collection. You can now buy copies of photographs taken by E.S. Lomax between 1937- 1949 although, obviously, with an interruption due to his incarceration during the War. His remarkable story is told in his book ‘The Railway Man’ which was adapted as a major feature film released in 2013. Lists 52,and 53 are the photographs taken by Eric Lomax available within the collection and available for purchase. The Lomax images consist of United Kingdom standard and narrow gauge steam locomotives, including all of the 'big four' companies, industrial operators, trams, India and Holland.
